Intersex intervention at the public consultation convened by the UN Independent Expert on SOGI

January 26, 2017 by Editorial

Public consultation with UN Independent Expert on SOGI, Prof. Vitit Muntarbhorn

On the 24th to 25th of January 2017 the UN Independent Expert on SOGI, Prof. Vitit Muntarbhorn, convened a public consultation in Geneva including States’ representatives, United Nations agencies, programmes and funds, regional human rights mechanisms, National Human Rights Institutions and civil society organizations.

The consultation offered a platform of dialogue between participants, including facilitating the exchange of experiences, knowledge, and lessons learned. The Independent Expert exchanged views with participants on defining the scope of his work, setting priorities and developing effective strategies.

OII Europe, represented by Co-Chair Dan Christian Ghattas and Steering Board Member Alessandro Comeni, together with the ILGA Intersex Secretariat, represented by NNID’s Executive Director and OII Europe Co-Chair Miriam van der Have, GATE consultant/OII Australia Co-Director Morgan Carpenter, the Independent Intersex Expert and Founder of “Bodies like ours”, Betsy Driver and the Executive Director of GATE, Mauro Cabral, presented the diversity of intersex lives and intersex issues.

The Independent Expert has emphasized that he wants to include intersex issues in his work and we appreciate to have been given the opportunity to further inform Prof. Vitit Muntarbhorn during the public consultation about the human rights that are at stake. The conversation continued in a closed intersex meeting with the Independent Expert on Thursday 26th.
