Making our resources available in multiple languages
OII Europe is dedicated to making its policy work and empowering material available to intersex communities who can use it for their advocacy work across the Council of Europe region. In the light of limited funding for intersex organisations it is crucial to share materials among intersex activists and organisations. In order to make the content available in more languages we work with translators from the intersex community to ensure the quality of terminologies and a human rights based and depathologizing approach and sensitivity.
Translating our materials
About the process of translating OII Europe’s materials from English to other languages
We regularly include translations of our materials into other languages in our annual planning and budgets. For accountability and transparency reasons we follow certain standards of procedure. These include contracting the translators, proofreaders and layouters and paying an honorary fee for their services, after they have provided us with a proper invoice. Furthermore, quality control and tracking, and overall coordinating and communications are all part of the process.
Sometimes we receive inquiries for translating our materials, or an (inofficial) translation has already been undertaken, sometimes even published, without our knowledge or consent. This does not comply with our standards, and it might violate our copyright regulations that are set under the Creative Commons licence Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 4.0 International CC BY-NC-ND 4.0.To prevent this, we kindly ask anyone who would like to translate our materials to first contact us so we can work out a collaboration process and keep the quality standards we aim to uphold.
We seek translators that
- are sensitised to intersex human rights issues and/or are intersex themselves
- are ideally native speakers of the language they translate to
- have extensive knowledge and are understanding of the legal, social, cultural and scientific discourses and terminologies that relate to intersex
As a plus we consider
- being part of the intersex movement
- being an intersex community member
- being an intersex activist
- being an ally from another minority group (LGBTQA+; Person with a Disability; FGM/GC survivor; Etc.)
Practicalities…
…for translating:
The OII Europe materials are provided as a PDF file. If available we provide a word document with the text to be translated. The published pdf version is always the reference document.
The translation needs to be submitted as a text-file (word document, google-doc, etc) and should contain all the correct formatting that the published english version has (Headers, bold text, italic, list items, paragraphs, footnotes etc.).
Boxes and other layout-specific items need to be marked and highlighted in a comment (comments in English).
Do not create or use a file that is containing any remnants of a layout structure (for example from “PDF to Word”-converters) – the text flow needs to be unbroken.
…for publishing:
For the typesetting/layouting of the translated publication we work with professional layouters. If applicable, we can provide an Adobe Indesign Template document of the publication that should be used. Please refrain from using any other software or online tools to create a layouted document, as this would a) not meet our quality standards, and b) violate our copyright creative commons licence (“No Derivatives – If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material”).
In case of national intersex organisations and / or member organisations of OII Europe we usually allow adding the national organisation logo and name to the publication. In some instances, for example the parents’ toolkit, is it possible to include additional information or make minor adjustments to meet the needs for the national context. This needs to be communicated with us beforehand.
